Clothes for Church?

Hello, internet!

For the longest time, I've wanted to start blogging about stuff that interests me. So here I am!
My name is wishfulthinker.

I am a nineteen year old girl/woman/muggle Christian who loves listening to metalcore, dubstep, and folk music.
I also love lace, leather, and my knee-high converse.

Needless to say, in the Midwest where I live, I stand out. And especially at my church.

My church is an enigma sometimes- because I've been going to this church for four years and I still can't figure it out.
Something that my pastor says often is that the church is made up of the people- and I believe that. My church is very diverse. We have mostly white people that go to my church, but there are some mixed families as well. But the most diverse thing about my church is the age range.
We have people in the toddler phase and people in the puberty phase and people in the retirement phase. But with any group of people, we don't always get along.

One of the small things that we clash about is dressing up for church. Shouldn't be a big deal, right?
Well, it is. The older people want to wear their Sunday best. The younger people want to wear jeans with holes in them and skater shoes (actually, that's what my little brother wears all the time).

And there was nothing wrong with that; until the clothes war came upon us.
It was a dark time... the old ones fought with ferocity that I had never seen before. Using verbal arsenal as well as unfashionable clothes, they threatened to consume us young ones until we were all stuck in the 80's. Just as we were beginning to lose hope, a wild idea appeared! Church isn't about what you wear; it's about fellowship- i.e. hanging out with other Christians. With this truth the older ones backed off and women got to wear pants!

Even though the (fake) war is over, sometimes we still disagree and fight. Sometimes we teens still hear smack about the way we dress. One Sunday morning a person called the some of the teens in our church trash because of how we dressed.

Even though I love fashion, I don't think it matters much how we dress, as long as it's modest.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. (NIV, 1 Peter 3:2-5)

But I'd love to hear what you think! What do you wear to church? If you don't go to church, have you ever been insulted by someone because of what you were wearing? Let me know!
